Pairing and Using Grunge Fonts on Thumbnails
Keep one loud, textured font as the star and pair it with a clean condensed sans, like Oswald or Archivo Black, for any smaller supporting text.
Test every headline at real thumbnail size on a phone screen before publishing. Many of the most detailed distressed fonts turn to mush below a certain point size, so short words and heavy tracking usually work better than full sentences.
A dark outline or drop shadow behind bold text will do more for readability over a busy photo than switching to yet another font. Save the truly gothic or heavily textured faces for a single accent word rather than an entire title.
Limit a thumbnail to two typefaces at most, one for impact and one for support, so the design reads as intentional rather than cluttered.
