Choosing and pairing fonts for multilingual projects
Before committing to a typeface, always test it with the actual accented characters a project needs, not just the base alphabet.
A surprising number of otherwise excellent free fonts thin out or misalign diacritics at small sizes, so check body text sizes specifically.
For pairings, a neutral sans like Noto Sans, Inter, or Source Sans 3 pairs comfortably with a more expressive serif such as Alegreya, Lora, or EB Garamond.
Keep display faces like Playfair Display or Cormorant Garamond for short headlines, since their fine details are the first thing to suffer under heavy diacritic stacking.
When Vietnamese or Baltic languages are part of the brief, prioritize families like Be Vietnam Pro or PT Sans that were engineered with those diacritics in mind from the start.
